Paddle and Foot through Blackfeet Country
Blackfeet Indian Nation and the Upper Missouri
River, MT
This trip focuses on the Blackfeet perspective of Lewis
and Clark's arrival in their land. Based in a modern tipi with our Blackfeet
host, we venture out to the Two Medicine site and visit a historic buffalo
jump. We hear Indian viewpoints of contact with explorers, fur trappers,
and the Hudson Bay Company. At night we share a traditional Blackfeet
feast of bison meat. We continue by canoeing on the Upper Missouri National
Wild and Scenic River. This float beneath the White Cliffs is considered
one of the most scenic stretches along the entire Missouri. For 3 days
we paddle the river and will see how the Corps' route has changed little
since 1805.
