Walkabout
in Dreamtime
A Complete Aboriginal Experience THE DREAMTIME
"They say we have been here for 40,000 years,
but it's much longer. We have been here since time began. We have come
directly out of the Dreamtime of our creative ancestors."
Journey with us to the Aboriginal Dreamtime,
where the ancestor spirits are still present in the plants, animals,
rocks, even in the earth, itself. These spirits tell their stories
to the Aborigines, caretakers of the Dreamtime. Walkabout with the
natives, hearing Dreamtime tales about the land as our Aboriginal guides
show us rock art dated 65,000 years old. Learn to play the didgeridoo,
swim in a billabong, throw a boomerang, eat a grub, partake in a corroboree
(ceremonial dance) and sit around a campfire sampling foods such as
grilled kangaroo, damper and billy tea.
The real outback
This trip
will take you to the real outback of Australia, the Northern Territory.
Trek through remote Arnhemland, aboriginal owned and only accessible
by charter plane at this time of year. This pristine area is sparsely
populated and the Aborigines have retained much of their traditional
culture. Only a limited number of people are allowed to visit, and
special permits are required, but we have arranged lodging in a fully
outfitted private safari camp near sacred Mt Borradaile.
The Rainbow
Serpent, the creator-spirit of the Aborigines, originated in Mt. Borradaile
at the dawn of the Dreamtime. A brilliant 18 ft rock art image of
the Serpent waits patiently to tell its stories in a cave inside Mt.
Borradaile. Learn about local "bush tucker," traditional aboriginal
foods and medicine from the jungle. We'll boat into paper bark swamps
scouting for crocodiles at sunset. Along the way keep an eye out for
bandicoots, goannas, dingoes, wallabies, barramundis, jacamars, koalas,
and of course, KANGAROOS!
We delve further into Dreamtime at the
Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Alice Springs. For Aborigines, life
intertwines with art and Dreamtime spirituality. Witness the extraordinary
artistic expression at the Centre's art gallery, where sand drawings,
didgeridoos, baskets, and bush tools are exhibited. We'll also have
the opportunity to buy arts and crafts direct from the Aborigines.
During
our journey from Alice Springs to Uluru, we'll visit with Aboriginal
communities along the way. We'll go on walkabout with the desert Aborigines.
Since walkabouts do not have a fixed itinerary, activities may include
Dreamtime paintings in the sand, story telling, meeting with tribal
elders, traditional song and dance, boomerang and spear throwing, along
with eating bush foods (grubs!).
We complete our journey in Aboriginal
Australia at Uluru (Ayer's Rock). Uluru is the world's largest monolith,
standing in stark contrast against the flat desert floor. You will
sense its powerful energy in our trek around Uluru, and learn why Anangu
Aborigines will never climb Uluru. Our Anangu guides will speak of
the tribe's 60,000 year relationship with this sacred place. They
will demonstrate desert survival skills, as we hear Dreamtime stories
and songs aboutTatji, the red lizard and Lungkata, the emu thief.
